What is the treatment for Male Infertility?

Updated: Jul 5, 2022

The number of infertile couples has increased over the past decades. The problem of infertility has widened its reach and has impacted many young couples.

Infertility is defined as the inability of a couple to conceive after a year of trying. It can be caused by poor lifestyle changes, fast urbanization, hormonal changes, job pressures, stress, vehicular pollution, deferring parenting, and other proven medical conditions. Infertility isn't gender-specific, both men and women may bear equal responsibility for it.

Infertility in men is also a common problem just like female infertility. However, if you have infertility issues, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you won’t be able to have your own child with your partner. There are several Male Infertility Treatments available that can increase the chances of conception.

We'll take a look at it one by one. But before that, it's important to know the reason and the common causes that affect male infertility.

Conception is a complicated process that requires a man's sperm to combine with a woman's egg in order to conceive. If a male and a female partner have repeated unprotected intercourse for over a year and the female doesn’t get pregnant then you, she, or both of you may have infertility problems. For that, you need medical intervention.

The common causes that might affect your fertility include -

  • Low Sperm Count & Production

  • Varicocele (enlargement of veins in the scrotum)

  • Chronic health problems like Diabetes, Hypertension, etc.

  • Unhealthy lifestyle choices (high consumption of alcohol, smoking, drugs, etc.)

  • Malformed sperm

  • Genetic diseases

  • Hormonal disorders

  • Stress & Depression

  • Environmental causes (Excess heat, Toxicants, obesity), etc.

There can be other causes that can only be determined after undergoing testing which include semen analysis for any possible sperm-related issues, followed by a general physical examination, medical history, hormone & genetic testing, and as recommended by the fertility doctor.

Treatment for Male Infertility:

The good news is that male infertility can be treated. With advanced technology and methods, the number of treatment options for infertility in men has expanded. Based on the causes of infertility, your fertility doctor may recommend the following treatment options -

Medication

Your doctor may prescribe several medications and hormone therapy that can improve sperm count in men with infertility. You'll be guided on how frequently it should be taken.

Improving Lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle and a good diet are important. Some foods and nutrients are associated with greater male fertility benefits than others. It may include -

  • Supplements like D-aspartic acid (D-AA)

  • Regular Exercise and Yoga

  • Enough intake of Vitamin C & D

  • Zinc supplements such as meat, fish, eggs, etc.

  • Minimizing stress

  • Low exposure to heat

  • Reduced intake of alcohol

  • Quit smoking

  • And others as suggested by the fertility doctor

Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART)

In vitro fertilization (IVF) - The most effective infertility and widely used treatment option for couples if there are multiple fertility factors like - low sperm count and fallopian tube blockage or ovulation disorder in a female partner.

During the IVF process, the ovaries are stimulated with fertility medications. The mature eggs are then retrieved when they are ready. Fertilization is done by exposing the eggs to sperm in a culture dish. After that, the embryo is placed back into the uterus.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) - It is a technique that is done as one of the steps in the IVF process. A single sperm can be physically injected into an egg after the mature egg is retrieved during IVF. ICSI IVF procedures are recommended for couples who are facing certain specific male factor infertility problems.

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) - It is a simple & significant first step to treating male infertility. The process involves placing several washed sperm directly into the uterus. The IUI procedure works well for men with sperm motility issues.

Other Surgeries

Infertility in men can also be treated with other surgeries including Vasectomy reversal (reconnecting each tube (vas deferens) that carries sperm from a testicle into the semen), Sperm retrieval, and others.

If you're struggling with male infertility, it doesn't mean you'll never be able to live your dream of parenthood. Treatment for male infertility is constantly seeing advancement with modern technologies which are contributing to its higher success rate.
